International Space Station

I was looking up on April 23rd  from Crosby at the ISS as it sped across the sky when this fantastic photo was taken by Hadfield. You can get notifications of when the ISS is visible from your location on twitter at @VirtualAstro

Twitter name @Cmdr_Hadfield is currently the commander of the International Space Station and regularly tweets beautiful photographs from space. The ISS orbit is approximately 250 miles above the Earth and completes an orbit every 90 minutes . It is often very bright, obvious and appears to pass by about twice as fast as a Passenger Jet (550 mph at 6 miles up) even though it is travelling at more than 17 thousand miles an hour(5 miles a second)

Is Spring 6 weeks late? Moorside Park

I may be wrong but aren’t most blossom trees usually finished by now? Most have just started or have they been early for the past decade or so? Confusing! I’d say better for the bees as the weather will be warmer when they get pollinating although I noticed a large number of huge (Queen?) Bees bumbling around Crosby about a fortnight ago and many dead ones strewn around.

I noticed that this wallflower(Clematis?) on the Old Smithy at Little Crosby Village has not flowered yet even though two years ago; on the same day it was in Full bloom. See below

I went litter-picking in Moorside Park this morning with Friends of Moorside Park. Great time to do it as a nice warm day and the undergrowth has still not developed. Consequently the Park got a deep clean. Sadly, amongst the ancient Spangles wrappers and 5 Park Drive ciggie boxes were masses of recently deposited Dog poo bags, especially in one particular area. I’ll see If I can get a bin placed nearby.

SEfton have placed three good quality benches around the park funded by our ward grant last May as well as the new Outdoor Gym equipment. as reported in this link.

A large field has been partially ploughed and seeded with wildflowers. I discussed with F.O.M.P. chair’ Louise Hick’s and other members, the possibility of including “Incredible Edible”  type projects in the park.

Spring is on the way

I was speaking to regular Crosby in Bloom winner; Mr Paul Weston of Enfield Avenue yesterday. Paul remarked2013-04-14 17.03.14 how the trees are all very late coming into leaf this year. Paul said “The blossoms would usually be finished by the end of March”

I noticed these fat Oak tree buds though looking ready to open up so it looks like things will start happening again this week with the warmer air and the first rain for months falling over the last weekend.

I will be posting a feature later this week about Mr Weston’s preparations for the 2013 “Crosby in Bloom his front garden is already looking brilliant as usual.

How to read Bar codes – Glenda Roxas (UAE)

bar codesThis important information posted by Glena Roxas on Facebook tonight

With all the food and pet products now coming from China, it is best to make sure you read label at the supermarket and especially when buying food products. Many products no longer show where they were made, only give where the distributor is located.

Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China ? The world is also concerned about GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) foods; steroid fed animals (ex: 45 days old broiler chicken).

It is important to read the bar code to track its origin. How to read Bar Codes….interesting !

If the first 3 digits of the bar code are 690, 691 or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA.
471 is Made in Taiwan .
If the first 3 digits of the bar code are 00-09 then it’s made or sourced in USA.

Remember if the first 3 digits are:
690, 691, 692 … then it is MADE IN CHINA
00 – 09 … USA and CANADA
30 – 37 … FRANCE
40 – 44 … GERMANY
471 …….. Taiwan
45 or 49 ……..JAPAN
489………..HONG KONG
50 ………. UK
471……… is Made in TAIWAN (see sample)
740……….745 – CENTRAL AMERICA

All 480 Codes are Made in the PHILIPPINES.

Scramber bikes – Merseyside Police

I noticed yesterday that the turf on one huge field on the Central part of the Rimrose Valley had been badly damaged by what is clealy  motorbike/scrambler bike tracks. I have witnessed young teenagers roaring up and down that field before. I have also seen them racing around the Northern Road/Forefield/Brownmoor Lane area often with Pillion passengers neither with helmets.

This video from Merseyside Police shows how they deal with illegal motorbike use.
